Work Table Buying Guide
How to Choose the Right Stainless Steel Work Table for Food Processing, Commercial Kitchens, Bakeries, Laboratories, Manufacturing, and Industrial Applications
Work tables are among the most utilized pieces of equipment in any production, food service, laboratory, cleanroom, healthcare, or manufacturing environment. They serve as preparation stations, assembly surfaces, inspection areas, packaging stations, processing centers, and general-purpose workspaces that support daily operations.
While work tables may seem simple, selecting the wrong table can negatively impact productivity, employee ergonomics, sanitation, workflow efficiency, and equipment lifespan. The right work table can improve operational performance, support food safety programs, increase employee comfort, and provide decades of reliable service.
At Magna Industries, we design and manufacture custom stainless steel work tables, enclosed base tables, equipment stands, cleanroom workstations, laboratory furniture, and industrial fabrication solutions. This guide will help you choose the ideal work table for your specific application.

Why 304 Stainless Steel Is the Industry Standard
304 stainless steel offers:
Excellent Corrosion Resistance
Superior Cleanability
Food-Safe Surface
Long Equipment Life
Outstanding Value
Most commercial applications use 304 stainless steel.
When to Choose 316 Stainless Steel
316 stainless steel is recommended when:
Aggressive Chemicals Are Present
Salt Exposure Exists
Harsh Cleaning Agents Are Used
Corrosive Environments Exist
Applications include:
Pharmaceutical Production
Chemical Processing
Marine Environments
Certain Food Processing Operations
Galvanized Components vs. Stainless Steel
Some work tables use galvanized undershelves or legs.
Advantages:
Lower Initial Cost
Limitations:
Reduced Corrosion Resistance
Less Suitable for Washdown Environments
Shorter Lifespan
For professional food production, full stainless steel construction is generally preferred.
Step 5: Determine Load Capacity Requirements
Work tables must support:
Product Weight
Equipment Weight
Tools
Ingredients
Dynamic Loads
Common load ratings include:
500 lbs
1,000 lbs
1,500 lbs
2,000+ lbs
Always select a table with adequate safety margin.
Step 6: Choose the Correct Top Style
Different tasks require different work surfaces.
Flat Top Tables
Most common design.
Ideal for:
Food Preparation
Packaging
Assembly
General Production
Backsplash Tables
Include a rear splash.
Ideal for:
Food Processing
Dishwashing Areas
Wet Environments

Liquid Processing
Laboratories
Wet Applications
Pharmaceutical Operations
Step 7: Evaluate Storage Requirements
Many workstations benefit from integrated storage.
Options include:
Undershelves
Drawers
Cabinets
Tool Holders
Overhead Shelving
Equipment Mounts
Storage improves organization and productivity.
Open Base vs. Enclosed Base Tables
Open Base Tables
Advantages:
Easy Cleaning
Better Access
Lower Cost
Simpler Design
Enclosed Base Tables
Advantages:
Protected Storage
Improved Organization
Cleaner Appearance
Increased Functionality
The best choice depends on workflow and storage needs.
Step 8: Consider Mobility Requirements
Will the table remain stationary?
Or will it move throughout the facility?
Stationary Tables
Best for:
Permanent Workstations
Heavy Equipment
Fixed Production Areas
Mobile Work Tables
Best for:
Flexible Manufacturing
Lean Operations
Production Changes
Multi-Use Areas
Mobility can significantly improve operational flexibility.
Choosing Casters for Mobile Work Tables
