Choosing the Right Casters for Industrial Applications
The Complete Guide to Industrial, Bakery, Food Processing, Pharmaceutical, Laboratory, Cleanroom, and Material Handling Casters
Casters are often the most overlooked component of industrial equipment, yet they have a greater impact on equipment performance than almost any other individual part. The wrong caster can make a cart difficult to push, increase employee fatigue, damage floors, create safety hazards, and significantly increase maintenance costs. The right caster can improve productivity, reduce injuries, extend equipment life, and enhance overall workflow efficiency.
Whether you're selecting casters for bakery oven racks, proofing racks, cooling racks, transportation carts, mobile workstations, ingredient bins, laboratory furniture, pharmaceutical equipment, or warehouse material handling systems, understanding the key design considerations is essential.
At Magna Industries, we engineer custom material handling equipment and bakery rack systems that operate in some of the most demanding environments in North America. This guide explains how to select the right caster system for maximum performance, durability, and return on investment.
Why Casters Matter More Than Most People Realize
Most industrial equipment failures don't begin with the frame—they begin with the wheels.
Casters directly influence:
Employee Safety
Ergonomics
Equipment Mobility
Product Damage Prevention
Floor Protection
Maintenance Costs
Equipment Life Expectancy
Production Efficiency
Poor caster selection often results in:
- Increased pushing force
- Employee fatigue
- Premature wheel failure
- Broken welds
- Damaged flooring
- Product loss
- Excessive maintenance
A properly selected caster system can dramatically improve operational performance.
The True Cost of Poor Caster Selection
Many companies focus solely on purchase price when selecting casters.
However, the actual costs often include:
Lost Labor Productivity
Increased Injury Claims
Higher Maintenance Costs
Product Damage
Equipment Downtime
Floor Repairs
Employee Dissatisfaction
A caster that costs $20 less may ultimately cost thousands of dollars in lost productivity and repairs.
Step One: Determine Total Load Requirements
Before selecting any caster, calculate the actual operating weight.
Include:
Equipment Weight
Product Weight
Tool Weight
Dynamic Loads
Safety Factors
Example Calculation
Equipment Weight: 400 lbs
Product Weight: 1,200 lbs
Total Load:
1,600 lbs
Using four casters:
1,600 ÷ 4 = 400 lbs per caster
Add a minimum 25% safety margin:
400 × 1.25 = 500 lbs
Recommended caster capacity:
500 lbs minimum per caster
Never select casters based solely on static load calculations.
Dynamic Loads Are Often Overlooked
When equipment is moving, actual loads increase dramatically.
Factors include:
Floor Cracks
Expansion Joints
Door Thresholds
Loading Docks
Ramps
Sudden Stops
Impacts
Dynamic loading can exceed static loading by 20% to 50% or more.
This is particularly important for:
- Bakery racks
- Ingredient bins
- Material handling carts
- Mobile workstations
Wheel Diameter Selection
Wheel size has a major impact on performance.
4-Inch Casters
