Caster Selection Guide
How to Choose the Right Casters for Bakery Equipment, Transportation Carts, Workstations, Material Handling Systems, and Industrial Applications
Casters are often the most overlooked component of mobile equipment, yet they have a tremendous impact on productivity, ergonomics, equipment life, maintenance costs, employee safety, and product protection. Whether installed on bakery racks, transportation carts, work tables, ingredient bins, enclosed cabinets, mobile workstations, or industrial material handling equipment, the right caster can dramatically improve operational performance.
Unfortunately, many equipment failures, employee complaints, and maintenance issues can be traced directly to improper caster selection. Choosing the correct wheel material, load capacity, bearing type, wheel diameter, mounting configuration, and environmental compatibility is critical for long-term success.
At Magna Industries, we design and manufacture bakery racks, transportation carts, mobile workstations, and custom material handling equipment equipped with high-performance caster systems engineered for demanding commercial and industrial environments. This guide will help you select the ideal caster for your application.
Why Caster Selection Matters
Casters directly affect:
Equipment Mobility
Employee Ergonomics
Product Protection
Floor Protection
Equipment Life

Productivity
A high-quality cart with poor casters will perform poorly, while a properly selected caster system can significantly improve equipment performance.
Step 1: Understand the Application
The first step is defining how the equipment will be used.
Common applications include:
Bakery Racks
Oven Racks
Proofing Racks
Cooling Racks
Transportation Carts
Work Tables
Mobile Workstations
Ingredient Bins
Enclosed Cabinets
Industrial Material Handling Equipment
Different applications require different caster solutions.
Step 2: Determine Total Load Capacity
Load capacity is one of the most critical factors.
Calculate:
Equipment Weight
Product Weight
Contents Weight
Dynamic Loads
Safety Margin
The caster system must support both static and moving loads.
How to Calculate Caster Capacity
A simple formula:
(Total Load Weight ÷ Number of Casters) × Safety Factor
Example:
Equipment Weight = 300 lbs
Product Weight = 700 lbs
Total Load = 1,000 lbs
Four Casters:
1,000 ÷ 4 = 250 lbs per caster
Recommended Safety Margin:
250 lbs × 1.33 = 333 lbs minimum caster rating
Always include a safety factor to account for uneven loading and dynamic forces.
Static vs. Dynamic Loads
Many users only consider static weight.
However, moving equipment creates:
Impact Loads
Turning Forces
Floor Transition Loads
Ramp Loads
Shock Loads
Dynamic forces often exceed static loads.
Heavy-duty applications require additional capacity.
Step 3: Select the Proper Wheel Diameter
Wheel size significantly affects performance.
Common sizes include:
