Bun Pan Rack Selection Guide

How to Choose the Right Bun Pan Rack for Your Bakery, Food Service Operation, Commissary Kitchen, or Food Processing Facility

Bun pan racks are among the most essential pieces of equipment in commercial bakeries, food processing facilities, restaurants, commissary kitchens, supermarkets, schools, healthcare facilities, and institutional food service operations. They are used to store, transport, cool, proof, stage, and organize sheet pans throughout the production process.

While bun pan racks may appear simple, selecting the wrong rack can create workflow inefficiencies, increase labor costs, waste valuable floor space, contribute to product damage, and reduce equipment life. The right rack can improve organization, increase productivity, support food safety initiatives, and provide decades of reliable service.

At Magna Industries, we manufacture heavy-duty bun pan racks designed for demanding commercial and industrial applications. This guide will help you choose the best bun pan rack for your operation.

What Is a Bun Pan Rack?

A bun pan rack is a mobile or stationary storage system designed to hold standard bakery sheet pans.

Common applications include:

Product Cooling

Product Storage

Dough Staging

Production Organization

Transportation

Packaging Support

Finished Goods Handling

General Material Storage

Bun pan racks improve workflow by keeping products organized and easily accessible.

Why Selecting the Right Rack Matters

The correct bun pan rack can improve:

Production Efficiency

Product Quality

Material Flow

Employee Productivity

Storage Capacity

Floor Space Utilization

Food Safety

Equipment Longevity

The wrong rack often creates bottlenecks and unnecessary labor.

Step 1: Determine Your Pan Size

Before selecting a rack, identify the pan size being used.

Common sizes include:

Full-Size Sheet Pans

18" x 26"

Half-Size Sheet Pans

18" x 13"

European Pans

400 mm x 600 mm

Custom Baking Trays

Always verify actual pan dimensions before purchasing.

Step 2: Choose End Load or Side Load

One of the most important decisions involves rack orientation.

End Load Bun Pan Racks

Pans slide in from the narrow end.

Advantages include:

Smaller Footprint

Easier Access in Tight Spaces

Improved Storage Density

Efficient Traffic Flow

Applications:

Commercial Bakeries

Food Processing

Commissary Kitchens

Packaging Areas

End load racks are the most common configuration.

Side Load Bun Pan Racks

Pans slide in from the long side.

Advantages include:

Improved Pan Visibility

Faster Product Access

Easier Loading in Some Applications

Applications:

Retail Bakeries

Schools

Restaurants

Catering Operations

Selection often depends on workflow and available space.

Step 3: Select the Proper Pan Capacity

Capacity determines how many pans the rack can hold.

Common capacities include:

10 Pan

15 Pan

20 Pan

30 Pan

40 Pan

Custom Capacities

Higher capacity is not always the best solution.

The ideal capacity depends on:

Production Volume

Facility Layout

Product Type

Transportation Requirements

Available Floor Space

Understanding Slide Spacing

Slide spacing affects both rack capacity and product clearance.

1.5-Inch Centers

Maximum storage capacity.

Ideal for:

Empty Pan Storage

Thin Products

Dry Storage Applications

2-Inch Centers

Common for:

Cookies

Sheet Cakes

Flat Products

General Bakery Applications

Provides a balance between capacity and airflow.

3-Inch Centers

Suitable for:

Bread Products

Rolls

Dough Products

General Production

One of the most versatile options.

4-Inch Centers

Best for:

Decorated Cakes

Tall Products

Specialty Applications

Provides maximum product clearance.

Step 4: Consider Rack Material

Material selection directly impacts durability, sanitation, maintenance, and cost.

Aluminum Bun Pan Racks

Advantages:

Lightweight

Corrosion Resistant

Easy Mobility

Lower Initial Cost

Applications:

Retail Bakeries

Catering

Light-Duty Operations

Limitations:

Lower Structural Strength

Reduced Impact Resistance

Stainless Steel Bun Pan Racks

Preferred for demanding environments.

Advantages:

Corrosion Resistance

Long Service Life

Easy Cleaning

Food Safety Compliance

Superior Durability

Applications:

Commercial Bakeries

Food Processing Plants

Commissary Kitchens

Healthcare Facilities

Pharmaceutical Food Operations

Why 304 Stainless Steel Is Preferred

304 stainless steel offers:

Excellent Corrosion Resistance

Easy Maintenance

Food-Safe Construction

Long Equipment Life

Superior Value

Most professional bakery operations benefit from stainless steel construction.

Step 5: Evaluate Caster Requirements

Casters are among the most important rack components.

They affect:

Mobility

Ergonomics

Safety

Maintenance Costs

Rack Life

Poor caster selection often leads to equipment failures.

Common Caster Options

Polyurethane Wheels

Ideal for:

  • Smooth floors
  • General bakery operations
  • Quiet operation

Phenolic Wheels

Ideal for:

  • High-temperature environments
  • Heavy-duty applications
  • Oven-adjacent operations

Stainless Steel Casters

Ideal for:

  • Washdown environments
  • Food processing facilities
  • High-moisture operations

Step 6: Consider Mobility Requirements

Ask:

Will the rack remain stationary?

Will it move throughout production?

Will it be transported between departments?

Will it be used for route delivery?

The answers help determine frame design and caster specifications.

Step 7: Evaluate Storage Space

Floor space is valuable.

If storage space is limited, consider:

Nesting Racks

High-Capacity Racks

Mobile Storage Systems

Multi-Purpose Rack Designs

Efficient storage improves productivity and reduces congestion.

Benefits of Nesting Bun Pan Racks

Nesting racks are designed to telescope together when empty.

Benefits include:

Reduced Storage Footprint

Improved Workflow

Better Traffic Flow

Lower Facility Costs

Increased Production Space

Many facilities recover 50% or more of empty rack storage space.

Food Safety and Sanitation Considerations

Sanitary design is critical in food production environments.

Look for:

Smooth Surfaces

Continuous Welds

Sealed Tubing

Corrosion Resistance

Easy-Clean Construction

These features simplify sanitation and support HACCP programs.

Heavy-Duty vs. Economy Construction

Not all bun pan racks are built equally.

Heavy-duty racks typically include:

Larger Structural Tubing

Reinforced Frames

Superior Weld Quality

Higher Load Ratings

Longer Service Life

The lowest-priced rack is rarely the lowest-cost rack over its lifetime.

Load Capacity Considerations

Overloaded racks experience:

Bent Frames

Broken Welds

Caster Failures

Reduced Equipment Life

Always verify:

Product Weight

Pan Weight

Dynamic Loads

Transportation Conditions

Proper load ratings protect your investment.

Choosing Racks for Specific Applications

Commercial Bakeries

Recommended:

Stainless Steel Construction
